Ephrata Cloister. The Ephrata Cloister or Ephrata Community was a religious community, established in 1732 by Johann Conrad Beissel at Ephrata, in what is now Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The grounds of the community are now owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and are administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission .
Created in the Beaux-Arts style, it once housed the Reilly Brothers and Raub hardware store, and now contains a mall and apartment complex, called the Central Market Mall. It is located near the Lancaster Central Market, which stands at 23 North Market St. [2]
In January 1959, Watt & Shand acquired Appel & Weber, a jewelry store, and in June 1968, it acquired Hager's Department Store. In August 1984, the downtown store completed a $1 million (~$2.48 million in 2023), three-year renovation. By 1991, the downtown store was 220,000 square feet (20,000 m 2), cobbled together from seven different buildings.
